In Canada we have chosen SOS Children's Villages Canada as the organization that will propagate this work. Recipients of the 2002 Hilton Humanitarian Award and 13 time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, this outstanding organization builds housing for orphans and develops programs to feed, educate and nurture them. Northern Namibia is a region that has been devastated by decades of conflict and mired in poverty. Now this region is one of the worst affected areas of the HIV/AIDS pandemic which is sweeping across southern Africa, leaving thousands of children orphaned and vulnerable in its wake. Although this is the most populated region of Namibia, it has the fewest social services and the highest levels of poverty. Children who lose their parents are often left homeless and alone, unable to attend school or live in safety.
SOS Children's Villages Canada has chosen to ease this burden by building a new SOS Children's Village for orphaned and abandoned children. This will be the first time in history that an entire SOS Village is built with entirely Canadian funds!
The SOS Village will provide homes for 120 orphaned and abandoned children, and raise generations more. The children will be placed in a permanent home with a loving caregiver and new siblings that will provide safety and security. The children will receive all they require to live a happy, healthy life and have a bright future.
SOS will build 12 Family Homes which will be blended in with the surrounding community built in the similar simple, middle-class building style of the community. The SOS families will be true members of the community, fitting in seamlessly by having the same living standards and natural routines.
The village will also operate a kindergarten, serving both the village and the community around the SOS Village.
Construction began in October 2007, and completion is expected in beginning in November 2008. Admission of the first children will begin in 2009.
